Calibration
Frequently Asked Questions
Following are several
FAQs on calibration. Most of these are from the isfforum,
which is the public site of a group of the most active isf Calibrators.
You will note that Dave
Hancock, contributed to many of the FAQs.
- Why
Should I Calibrate MY HDTV?
- What Adjustments Should Be
Included in Video Calibration?
This is somewhat redundant with my description of the
calibration process, but I include the link for completeness.
- Is the Viewing Environment
Important?
Short answer - YES.
- How Much Does isf Calibration
Cost?
(The
pricing discussed in this FAQ reflects a range of prices, which
includes many high cost areas. Our typical price for
calibration
is lower ($250) and includes all inputs and scan rates that the
customer is using).
- How Soon Should I Calibrate My
New HDTV?
(This
is a key point to keep in mind when considering calibration from a Big
Box store that is included with delivery and set-up).
- Are There Limits to What Video
Calibration Can Fix?
(This is a GREAT point!! Calibration will not fix all
problems!)
- But I Was Told My HDTV Was
Calibrated at the Factory...
- Maybe I'll Calibrate My HDTV
Myself....
(Our
calibrator's investment in equipment alone is well in excess of
$10,000. Typical Big Box store calibration (discussed in the
sidebar), at
best, uses a $180 probe, a laptop and a DVD - PERIOD!)
- What About Using My Friend's
Calibrated Settings?
(This
FAQ does not touch on sample to sample variations that occur in all
production electronic equipment. Our experience shows
significant
variations in optimum settings from set to set of identical models).
- Is Video Calibration Permanent?
- Hiring a Non-isf or Non-isf Forum
Calibrator
(Note:
Dave Hancock, our isf Calibrator, was isf trained in 2001 and is a
founding member of the isf Forum. He has many years
experience at
Eastman Kodak, where some of his responsibilities included Test
&
Measurement systems, Color Management, and Color Calibration).
